Ageing of the Agricultural Population in Europe – Challenges & Solutions | CAP4Youth Information Shot #1

More than 9 million farmers in the EU are over the age of 55.

Age distribution of farmers in the EU:

  • 57% are over 55 years old
  • 31% are between 41 and 55 years old
  • 12% are under 40

Key barriers for young people:
Limited access to:

  • Land
  • Financing
  • Knowledge

Proposed solutions under the CAP 2023–2027:

  • Complementary income support for up to 5 years
  • Installation aid of up to €100,000 per holding
  • Investment support through targeted financial instruments, such as:
  • Loans with favorable terms
  • Rural Development Programme (RDP) interventions with increased subsidy rates

“Generational renewal is the key to a sustainable future for European agriculture.”
